The Cité Universitaire de Paris as seen from Fascist Italy
摘要
This research aims to reconstruct the various reasons for Italian extraneousness to the French project of the Cité Universitaire in Paris during the inter-war period. The contexts studied are those of Italian-French diplomatic relations as well as those of Italian cultural and university policy, in particular through an examination of the documentation preserved at the Archivio storico del Ministero degli Affari esteri (Rome) and at the Archivio centrale dello Stato, Ministero della Pubblica Istruzione MPI (since 1931 Ministero dell’Educazione Nazionale, MEN). Another precious source for this study is the correspondence of Giovanni Gentile, preserved at the Giovanni Gentile Foundation in Rome. Among the other types of sources, great attention is paied to consulting not only the opinion press, but also the specialised press, expression of the academic world, and above all the student press: the pages of ‘Il Popolo d’Italia’, ‘Gerarchia’, ‘L’Università italiana’, but also of ‘Libro e moschetto’ constitute a mirror where are reflected the ambivalent orientations of fascist cultural and foreign policy and where it is possible to follow the resonance of the CIUP project in Italy.
