Although Pennsylvania leads the US in dam removals, these are mostly antiquated derelict and dangerous small constructions on minor streams. Pennsylvania’s major rivers and watersheds (Allegheny, Susquehanna, Lackawanna, and Monongahela) are primarily still dammed for flood control and navigation purposes. The former motivation stems from endemic flooding due to Pennsylvania’s geography. The navigational demands for the area’s dams and locks are progressing toward recreational boating especially on the Monongahela River in the Pittsburgh area.
