This chapter aims to provide a diachronic overview of the violin instrument, beginning with the emergence of the violin in the European musical context, with a particular focus on its role in classical music. The discussion initially traces the violin not merely as a musical instrument but as a signifier of various socio-cultural values and meanings throughout history. It explores how the violin has embodied and communicated different ideals, emotions, and social changes within European classical music traditions. Subsequently, the focus shifts to the violin's repertoire in Romania, where the instrument acts as a bridge between the traditional and the universal in musical expression. Special attention is given to the way the violin connects Romanian folk and classical music traditions, serving as a conduit for cultural expression.
