Improving existing rules for grading raw materials for violins is a permanent request of luthiers and the musical instruments industry Traditionally, the violin makers classified the blanks following criteria based on wood density and annual rings width and regularity. More complex criteria can be developed based on some acoustical and mechanical parameters of wood in relation to wood anatomic structure. This chapter discusses the properties of violins blanks made of resonance spruce wood and of curly maple woodCurly maplewood originating from the East Carpathian Mountains in Romania.
