Viruses operate on a microscopic scale, and their behavior involves intricate interactions at a molecular level. The complex and dynamic nature of viral transmission pathways, host interactions, and mutation processes adds a layer of abstraction that requires students to engage in imaginative thinking. Thus, traditional approaches relying on static visuals or theoretical explanations fall short of providing a comprehensive understanding. This work proposes Virulent Odyssey, a Virtual Reality (VR) game to assist the education process for virus epidemiology and viral infections. Equipped with a VR Head-Mounted Display (HMD), students can use the controllers to navigate through a bloodstream, encountering various challenges. The game unfolds as a series of levels, using audio cues as a way-finding strategy to provide information on the virus’ life cycle. The game was created following a Human-Centered Design (HCD) methodology with domain experts. In addition, an initial assessment was conducted with 22 individuals comprising distinct backgrounds to obtain first impressions regarding game narrative, interaction, and usability. Results suggest Virulent Odyssey has the potential to capture users’ attention while helping to acquire new concepts.
