Healthcare facilities, while unique due to their human-centric operations, can be likened to open, self-regulating systems where contemporary management methods, such as Lean Management, can significantly enhance patient value and improve operational efficiency, as well as service quality. This case study explores the application of management methodologies, typically used in market economies, within a pathology service. The study draws on research conducted between 2019 to 2023, which focused on reducing the managerial risks, as well as on a successful project implementation of Lean Management tools in the pathology processes. Modern management applications, including principles from General Systems Theory, decision optimization procedures, and Lean Management tools were applied with the aim to reduce risks and sample processing time. Key modern management methods applied in the study include: 5S method, Lean Manufacturing principles, the “5 Whys” technique, and DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) methodology from Lean Six Sigma. The application of these methods in the pathology service of SCJ Mureș (Mureș County Clinical Hospital) resulted in improved workflow efficiency, better resource utilization, and increased staff and patient satisfaction. The application of the listed methods in CSJ Mureș lead to enhanced workplace organization and reduced waste, as well as a 34% reduction in the average sectioning time for paraffin blocks within the first six months of project implementation, which was maintained thereafter. The study underscores the necessity of adopting intelligent work methods and modern management techniques to achieve higher performance and sustainability in healthcare services.
