This scoping review of pediatric patient blood management (PBM) is intended to answer many practical questions that arise when managing an anemic or bleeding child in the perioperative period. Perioperative pediatric PBM is recognized but management information has advanced slowly, with most published evidence arising from adult-based research. Pediatric blood management outcomes and benchmarks are unknown, save for large registries that require self-reporting. A general lack of formalized transfusion medicine education for bedside healthcare practitioners creates crucial knowledge gaps. The chapters in this book discuss optimal blood stewardship and safety, including patient verification and blood conservation solutions. Case scenarios opening each chapter will be familiar to readers who manage blood loss in children undergoing surgery.
