“Understand” follows Leon Greco, the protagonist, after he is injected with the experimental drug “hormone k” to repair the brain damage he suffered from an accidental drowning. As described in the story, “hormone k” does more than merely repair Greco’s damaged brain: it replaces damaged neurons with healthy neurons that contain many more dendrites than their predecessors. This makes “hormone k” an ideal drug to restore brain function.
