This chapter provides an introduction to KoreanKorean (Sect. 3.2), the focal language of the current study and the linguistic and multimodal features of the Korean politeness system (Sect. 3.2). Finally, the chapter overviews previous claims made regarding politeness metapragmaticsMetapragmatics in Korean (Sect. 3.3) and then sketches out research gaps that the current study proposes to fill (Sect. 3.4). Providing this overview is essential in order to familiarize readers with the linguistic and embodied properties of the Korean politeness system, which are frequently alluded to in the analysis that follows in later chapters. In addition, the chapter provides important information regarding previous claims regarding metapragmaticsMetapragmatics in Korean in previous research and, in doing so, introduces several metaconcepts that occur later in the data analysis.
