Process and time are key to studying, appreciating, designing, and making things. An essential question, then, for creative production is not just What is that? but How is that?—in other words, How did that or, how can that, come to be? As a process carried out over time, computation offers a means for rethinking, representing, and elevating the How in designing and making activities. Shape grammars are a special computational theory that have, from their inception 50 years ago, been directed toward the How of design. Building on the theory and applications of shape grammars, making grammars also prioritize the How, with a focus on the physical making of material things. Aspects of the time or temporality of making can be computed with making grammars too. A making grammar for the drawings of the artist Fritz Glarner is discussed here to demonstrate a computational framework for capturing some dimensions of time as it unfolds in creative processes.
