Rewriting Shape Rules

Over the last half-century, shape grammar formalism has equipped designers with a visual framework for interpreting architectural languages through computation. The canonical shape grammars are valued primarily for their manual encoding of shape rules and subsequent design generation through analog drawing. This approach has captured the intuitive and immediate power of visual computing for design. Still, it has yet to focus equally on the processes of designing and implementing shape rules digitally to further the discourse. This chapter presents insights from designing shape rules and programming with them to initiate discussions on the value of encoding shape grammars to rewrite design narratives that impact our reading of architectural histories and theories over time. The process of rule implementation utilized here, to develop from analog to animate, is achieved by the computer-aided drawing of rules, closing the distance between shape grammar theory and digital mediums for computer-aided grammars. The research engages with the possibilities and current limitations of animating shape grammars with machine feedback to reflect on how an evolving, automated take on designing shape rules can enliven our approach to visual computing in architectural theory, history, and future practices in architecture and design.
