Shape Machine: Shape-Based Search and Replace in CAD

Why haven’t the Find and Replace operations, so essential in Word and Excel, been implemented yet in CAD? What would happen if we could seamlessly use vector-based shape rewrite operations with CAD operators in a logical processing framework to literally write programming code by drawing shapes? How would this affect our current view of computation, and what would it mean for design? The paper discusses the current state of Shape Machine, a shape-rewrite computational system that features shape-based operations and a logical processing framework developed at the Shape Computation Lab at the Georgia Institute of Technology, and currently integrated within Rhinoceros, a NURBS 2D/3D CAD software. Four applications across architecture and computer science are briefly discussed to showcase the potential impact of this new technology.
