Technology in Vascular Access

Health technology plays a fundamental role in the delivery of modern healthcare, and vascular access is no exception. This chapter considers the application of scientific knowledge and discovery in neonatal vascular access practice. Health technology is a vast area of research and manufacturing. It encompasses many interrelated and overlapping areas of human endeavour. The categories include information technology and computing, materials science, medical physics, pharmacological science, engineering, product design, clinical microbiology, marketing, and sustainability. These areas have direct relevance to vascular access. Essential understandings of low and high health technology approaches and how they can be integrated with nursing-led interventions to solve problems associated with vascular access are considered in this chapter.
