Neonatal Vascular Access: An Overview of Its Unique Aspects
摘要
This chapter sets out an overview of neonatal vascular access. It considers early developments in vascular access and distinctive aspects of neonatal physiology and anatomy that can impact vascular access. These topics include the vasculature, integumentary, and immune systems and the impacts of preterm birth. An approach to clinical management of vascular access, a neonatal vascular access management plan (n-VAMP), is proposed to stimulate debate and reflection. Ideas about neuroprotective and family-integrated models of care are summarised as a precursor to their application in subsequent chapters. This chapter outlines the preferred approach for infection prevention and control and the terminology used throughout this book concerning neonatal vascular access devices. Essential knowledge concerning neonatal anatomy and physiology integrated with neuroprotection and family engagement paradigms is applied throughout this book.
