This chapter assesses the EU’s position in the emerging energy geopolitics. The chapter is divided into two parts, each aligning with one main research objective of the monograph. The first part aims to map the extent and the ways in which the EU emerges as a relative winner of the global energy transition across the energy security, economic power and power position dimensions. This part also extends to a discussion of EU climate justice entrepreneurship and envisages a critical examination of the trade-offs implicated across these dimensions. The second part aims to explore whether a world of clean energy will be more conducive to peace and cooperation or conflict. After establishing some key synergies between the global energy transition and peace and cooperation, it focuses its attention on five emerging risks that carry significant conflict potential. Petrostates’, including Russia’s, instability, the spectrum of a global financial crisis and conflict induced by new energy materialities and ecocidal-genocidal practices implicated in the global energy transition undermine prospects for peace, security and cooperation. The chapter underscores the complexity of these challenges and offers some insight into the EU’s potential strategic responses.
