Application Issues of Fog Computing Technology in Smart City Environment

The infrastructure of a smart city is built on the basis of high technology. However, due to limitations in processing power, power supplies, memory, etc. smart devices used in smart city environments often make extensive use of cloud technology services. This technology is considered a promising solution to provide end users with a variety of resources at a lower cost. Therefore, cloud technologies with high computing power and memory are considered an effective solution for data processing. Although cloud technology is an effective technology for processing and storing generated data, existing applications have limitations due to real-time or latency usage. However, issues like limited network bandwidth cannot be addressed by cloud technologies alone. Considering the above, intermediate computing systems are currently widely used for the initial processing of data collected from sensors in a smart city environment. In this regard, in addition to cloud technologies, a new computing model known as fog computing has been introduced. Fog computing technology is a new concept that offers an adequate solution for smart cities. Fog computing technology has been proposed as an alternative solution to support geographically distributed applications and reduce the load on data centers and networks in traditional cloud systems. To this end, the article examines the application of fog computing technology in a smart city environment. The advantages, architecture, and areas of application of fog computing technology in a smart city environment are analyzed. Current problems in the field of fog computing are shown.
