Linguistic Analysis of Discourse on Climate Change

The purpose of this article is to define the concepts of “discourse” and “environmental discourse,” as well as a linguistic analysis of discourse concerning climate change. Recently, there has been an increased interest in environmental problems, which has arisen as a result of the worsening environmental crisis and the increased concern of the world community about environmental issues. On the one hand, the problem of climate change is common to all humanity. On the other hand, it concerns each and every one individually. The appearance of the term discourse and the direction of discourse analysis dates back to the 50s of the twentieth century. Linguists understand by discourse the specific methods or varieties of speech inherent in institutions and social groups, which correlate with the place and purpose of a given institution in the social life of society. Increased attention in the modern world to issues of ecology, the environment and human existence in it has led to the emergence of a new concept in linguistics. This is the concept of environmental discourse. The article also provides definitions of discourse from the point of view of various linguists and scientists.
