Comparing RNAi and CRISPR in the Fall Armyworm: A Meta-Analysis, Mechanisms, and Perspectives
摘要
RNA interference (RNAi) and clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats-associated protein 9 (CRISPR-Cas9) are two prominent technologies that are revolutionizing crop protection, especially in combating notorious pests, such as the fall armyworm (FAW, Spodoptera frugiperda). This meta-analysis explores the efficacy, mechanisms, and future perspectives of RNAi and CRISPR in controlling FAW infestations. By systematically reviewing recent literature, we assessed the effectiveness of these technologies in suppressing FAW populations and elucidated the underlying molecular mechanisms driving their success. RNAi, with its ability to silence target genes, and CRISPR-Cas9, offering precise genome-editing capabilities, exhibit promising results in reducing FAW damage to agricultural crops. Furthermore, we discussed the challenges and opportunities associated with the widespread implementation of RNAi and CRISPR-Cas9, emphasizing the importance of continued research to optimize their use for sustainable pest management strategies. This comprehensive analysis underscores the potential of RNAi and CRISPR-Cas9 as tools in the control of FAW and offers insights into their integration into integrated pest management (IPM) strategies.
