This chapter provides a synthetic panorama of the most relevant and commonly used standards (together with reference models and frameworks) with respect to planning, designing, implementing, and managing interoperable systems, either automated, collaborative, or else. It also points out the essential IT protocols commonly employed for achieving interoperability in building integrated business solutions. In addition, useful interoperability standards are indicated for some specific application domains such as healthcare, finance, chemical industry, transportation, or governments.
