This chapter starts by reviewing common definitions of interoperability with the aim to establish a working definition. It then explains the difference between integration and interoperability, both at system and enterprise levels. Next, basic principles of interoperability are identified and discussed. Finally, interoperability concepts and principles are consolidated in holistic ways in the form of frameworks and reference models.
