Criollo Marriage and Daily Life
摘要
Marriage and the behaviors surrounding it are a mirror through which to learn about the social aspects and practices where they developed, in this case the Philippine Islands. We have an exceptional source: Juan de Paz’s legal and moral consultations and answers for resolving judicial cases or other problems addressed to him from the ecclesiastical court of Manila. Through these cases, which arise from the requests presented by the Spaniards for unconsummated marriage dispensation, as well as for marriage nullity or divorce, we gain insight into the customs of the time, the position of women, the role of honor, the problems of those who intended to marry, and other characteristics of the Philippine society.
