Evidence of jaboticaba’s potential to prevent and assist in the treatment of noncommunicable diseases has grown in the last decade. In this chapter, jaboticaba interventions in in vitro, ex vivo, in vivo, and clinical studies regarding the management of obesity and its comorbidities, type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, and neurological disorders were reviewed. Jaboticaba fruit or derived product consumption has been consistently associated with body weight, adiposity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and hepatic steatosis control in obesity and glycemic metabolism studies. Regarding cardiovascular health, some preclinical studies suggest that jaboticaba may improve vascular function, blood pressure, antioxidant status in heart tissue, and remodeling parameters and act as an antiatherosclerotic agent. Meanwhile, few studies evaluated jaboticaba’s benefits on the central nervous system. Some evidence of jaboticaba neuroprotection mechanisms includes better redox, inflammatory, neuronal viability, insulin resistance, and tau protein status of the brain, as well as spatial memory performance. Overall, jaboticaba may be considered for future clinical studies as a complementary and alternative tool for managing these disturbances.
