As a photographer of the ‘Movida madrileña’, Ouka Leele (Bárbara Allende Gil de Biedma, 1957–2022) was most famous for her hyperreal painted photographs frequently seen in 1980s publications such as La Luna de Madrid. However, whilst the (anti-)political and aesthetic qualities of the ‘Movida’ remain important to an understanding of her work, this contribution explores Ouka Leele’s work within and beyond that period, attending to notions of space and in particular depth: depth of focus in the images, depth of form as paint layered over photograph and depth of engagement with her artistic heritage. The chapter demonstrates how Ouka Leele’s multi-medial connectedness does not simply transform her subjects into part of art history, but makes art history a constituent part of capturing the subject. Far more than an ephemeral product for pop magazines, Leele’s work is a major, understudied contribution to Spanish culture and the practices of women creators.
