Jane the Virgin is a unique comedy-drama-telenovela parody that was shown free to air on minor US TV network The CW over five seasons and one hundred episodes. Loosely based on Venezuelan telenovela Juana la Virgen (RCTV, 2002), it boasts the unlikely premise of the accidental insemination of a sexually inexperienced girl in Miami. A fan favourite amongst the 18–35 women and attracting an audience of over one million, it was also a major award winner, gaining the Golden Globe for best actress for its protagonist, breakout star Gina Rodriguez, among other awards. The show may be frothy fun, but it is also serious business for its expert creative team, led by established showrunner Jenny Snyder Urman.
