Rationalising the Need for Sustainability Study in Algerian Higher Education
摘要
Chapter 1 serves as an introduction, providing the background and context of the study, particularly focusing on the glotto-political changes that emerged post-2019 in higher education (HE). These changes are characterised by a new political will, which appeared to promise significant reforms in HE. The Algerian government has concentrated on two main areas of transformation within HE. Firstly, starting in 2020, the Ministry of Higher Education initiated the digitalisation of the education sector. This process began with e-learning and has since extended to include administrative procedures. Secondly, the government has introduced English as a medium of instruction (EMI) and established business incubators to support student-led business projects within universities. These initiatives reflect the government’s intention to enhance the quality of education and align it with the job market, thereby promoting sustainability. This chapter also addresses the importance of incorporating sustainability issues into Algerian HE. It lays the groundwork for future empirical studies that will explore the role of sustainability in HE in greater detail.
