D2StegE: Using Detectron2 to Segment Medical Image with Security Through Steganography and Encryption

The intellectual property protection of digital data, especially in the form of images, is causing serious concern in the healthcare domain. In this paper, we propose a segmentation-based joint steganography and encryption method called D2StegE that provides enhanced security of medical images while reducing the time cost of the encryption and decryption processes. In a specific approach, we employ steganography to conceal secret marks or images into the cover media – a method that is widely used for covert communications. The main purpose of steganography is to visually confuse unauthorised access; it can only be decoded by an authorised person. An open-source computer vision library developed by Facebook AI research known as Detectron2 is used to accurately identify the region of interest (ROI) portion of the marked media. Only the marked ROI is encrypted using a three-dimensional chaotic system to enhance the security while reducing the time expended. The experimental results demonstrate that our D2StegE approach provides the highest level of security, and it is also faster compared with existing schemes.
