This chapter discusses the significance and analytical advantages of the avoidableDeathavoidable disaster deathsDeathdisaster death approachAvoidable disaster deathsapproach for disaster risk management practiceDisaster Risk Managementpractice, policyDisaster Risk Managementpolicy, and researchDisaster Risk Managementresearch. Most importantly, this chapter identifies disaster risk management and health as the two most important sectors for reducing avoidable disaster deaths. Templates for improving the capacityCapacity of some actors in these sectors are presented through the matrices of amenable, preventable and Riskrisk governance risk governance. The example of SenegalSenegal is also discussed to understand the risk governance measures introduced to save lives.
