Avoidable Disaster Deaths in India

This chapter revisits the central questions of this book: How many avoidableDeathavoidable disaster deathsDeathdisaster death occurred from the impact of COVID-19 and the lockdownCOVID-19lockdown, and what are the circumstances and causes that led to these deaths? The content of 11 reputable English e-newspapers, three digital news services, and one e-magazine were reviewed from March to December 2020 to capture the number of avoidable disaster deaths. Dynamic strategies were adopted to ascertain the causesDisastercauses and circumstances of death. 520 deaths and 32 different causes were found. Twenty-nine cases of preventable, amenableDeathamenable, and risk-governance-relatedDeathgovernance-related avoidable disaster deaths are also presented. The economic, humanitarian and psycho-social impactPsycho-social impact of the lockdown is also discussed. The number of avoidable disaster deaths is not representative but rather illustrative. This demonstrates that the avoidable disaster deathsDeathdisaster death approachAvoidable disaster deathsapproach can provide much-needed guidance in data collection and be a practical tool to make sense of disaster deaths to improve disaster managementDisasterdisaster management practices and save lives.
