This chapter introduces the ‘avoidableDeathdisaster death disaster deathsAvoidable disaster deathsapproach’ (ADD) approach. The concept of ‘unavoidable deathsDeathunavoidable’ is also discussed. The concept of ‘avoidableDeathavoidable deaths’ has its roots in public health and epidemiology. This study has expanded this concept to ‘avoidable disaster deaths’ by invoking theories and approaches from disasters, systems thinkingSystems thinking, geography, crisis and risk management. By doing so, this approach is distinct from ‘avoidableDeathavoidable deaths’. This chapter also introduces templates and matrices for policymakersPolicymakers and practitioners to make sense of avoidable disaster deathsDeathdisaster death andUnavoidable death unavoidable deathsDeathunavoidable so that the capacityCapacity of the disaster responseDisasterdisaster response system can be developed to save lives in a disaster climate.
