Chemically Induced Hypertension: Antineoplastic Agents Associated with High Blood Pressure

Over the last few decades, the introduction of novel antineoplastic therapies has improved cancer survival, but not without cost. Clinicians are increasingly recognizing the systemic adverse effects of anticancer therapies, one of which is the development or exacerbation of hypertension. Antineoplastic drugs most associated with hypertension include vascular endothelial growth factor signaling pathway inhibitors, tyrosine kinase inhibitors, proteosome inhibitors, and platinum compounds. Use of adjuvant medications including glucocorticoids and calcineurin inhibitors has also been implicated in the development of hypertension in these patients. In this chapter, we will review these and other agents that are used in the treatment of malignancy. Given potential for serious consequences if left untreated, clinicians should facilitate closer blood pressure monitoring in patients known to be at an increased risk for antineoplastic-related hypertension. Subsequent treatment can be tailored to the patient based on current practice guidelines, comorbidities, and consideration of drug-drug interactions.
