Streetscapes are the key component of urban design that represent most of the public space in a city and bring people together. This space has a significant impact on city life and should be built sustainably. A large side of human health is influenced or affected by the streetscape with which they interact. In the heart of Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, India, surrounded by the Himalayas’ mist-shrouded peaks, located a town named McLeod Ganj. The town streetscapes bring Tibetan culture and spiritual tranquillity to life. Jogiwala and Temple streets serve as the city’s cultural, historical, and social hubs and serve a range of tourists through local goods, crafts, and cuisine. With the pace of urbanization, these streets of McLeod Ganj are facing various problems like road congestion, non-pedestrian-friendly spaces, waste management, etc. These issues are depleting these street’s soul character and cultural identity. Furthermore, the sense of the place is also dwindling every day, and these corridors have lost some of their cultural significance. In this research paper, rejuvenation has been used as a tool for placemaking to bring back the cultural identity and sense of place for a sustainable future of the McLeod Ganj area. This research also explores human perception towards the built environment and how it is affecting the character of the street as a public space. On-site surveys and literature studies were used to identify people’s perceptions, constraints of the street, functional factors, and the potential of the area. This study offers useful recommendations to help local communities, lawmakers, and urban planners build sustainable streetscapes.
