Geomorphology and Ecology of West Bengal Coast

The West Bengal coast, fringing the Bay of Bengal along its northern periphery, extends for a length of 392 km from the state boundary between Odisha and West Bengal in the west to the India-Bangladesh international border in the east. It comprises the lower part of the Ganga Delta towards the east and the beach ridge chenier coast of Subarnarekha Delta towards the west, which is separated by the Hugli estuary. As a part of the Bengal basin, the coastal zone has undergone a complex evolutionary history. While the western part has evolved over the shallow self zone and composed of sediments derived from the parts of Peninsular India, but the eastern segment belongs to the deeper basin, which are recipients of geosyncline deposits of huge quantity of sediments from the Himalayas. The present coastal configuration can be traced through several stages of Late Pleistocene development and the Holocene formations. Based on coastal processes, hydrodynamics, tidal range and site character, five broad physiographic units have been identified. These are: (i) deltaic coastal plains dominated by fluvial and tidal floodplains, (ii) estuarine delta of the Hugli River system, (iii) Subaqueous parts of the Ganga Delta and Midnapur Littoral tract, (iv) Kanthi coastal plain with beach ridge cheniers interspaced by swales or paleo tidal basins and (v) estuarine floodplains of Kasai and Rupnarayan river system. Ecologically, the eastern part is significant as the type locality of mangrove habitat, and forms the India segment of the world-renowned Sundarbans. Other main ecological units are salt marshes and coastal sand dunes. Human intervention has modified the landscape in various measures. This chapter discusses the characteristics of various geomorphic and ecological units evolved in the coastal plain, including human-induced changes and the possible impacts due to natural hazards and sea level rise.
