CCUS in Qatar

In recent years, Qatar has notably advanced its projects in carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS), making significant strides towards improved environmental sustainability and greenhouse gas emissions. The country’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) has propelled it to invest heavily in innovative technologies and infrastructure to capture and store carbon dioxide emissions from various industrial sources. Also, Qatar has also embraced the concept of carbon utilization, exploring ways to convert captured CO2 into valuable products such as chemicals, fuels, and building materials. These efforts not only contribute to mitigating climate change but also provide economic opportunities for the nation. Qatar has also been a pioneer in climate mitigation, and, in addition to its launch of CCUS projects, which double the positive impact of its GHG reduction efforts, Qatar hosted the Qatar CCUS Forum in May 2023, in Doha, which underscored projects such as the first international carbon credit programme in the Global South. Qatar’s efforts in CCUS have been significant in recent years. The country has invested heavily in developing technologies and infrastructure to capture and store carbon dioxide emissions. Additionally, Qatar has also focused on utilizing captured CO2 for various industrial processes, such as enhanced oil recovery. These efforts demonstrate Qatar’s commitment to environmental sustainability and its proactive approach in addressing climate change concerns. This study aims to analyse the potential for CCUS in Qatar. Qatar is known for its large carbon emissions due to its heavy reliance on fossil fuels. The implementation of CCUS technologies can help mitigate these emissions and contribute to Qatar's commitment to addressing climate change. The study will examine the feasibility, costs, and potential benefits of CCUS in Qatar, as well as the challenges and opportunities associated with its implementation. Overall, this research will provide valuable insights into the role of CCUS in Qatar's efforts to reduce carbon emissions and transition to a more sustainable energy future.
