As a petroleum producing nation, to date Australia has relied on both oil and gas, but particularly gas as a fuel for both generation of electricity and the production of heat for industry. As Australia becomes part of the global effort to reduce mean temperature below 2 ℃, and even restrict to 1 ℃, there is a continual focus on the use of gas as a fuel. Robust deployment of carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) is necessary to meet Australia's ambitious climate targets. This chapter examines Australia's CCUS legislative framework, emphasising its importance in mitigating climate change and pointing out major obstacles and loopholes in the laws that are already in place.
