Organizations face an increasingly dynamic and competitive business environment due to developments such as digitalization, technological change, globalization, demographical change, and ecological threats. To thrive in such an uncertain environment, organizations need strategic and operational flexibility. This can be especially difficult for franchise networks due to the high level of interdependence among the franchisor and its franchisees, combined with diverging interests. One instrument to alleviate such difficulties is establishing an independent franchisee association (IndFA). IndFAs enable franchisees to amplify their voices and advocate for their interests toward their franchisors more effectively, while franchisors benefit from well-functioning IndFAs as they foster structured communication within their franchise networks. The main objective of this study is to develop a theoretical model for the professionalization of IndFAs. We reviewed literature on formal franchisee representation and on organizational professionalization to build an initial theoretical model. To assess the model’s validity and to refine it, we conducted in-depth interviews with seven franchise experts (i.e., franchise consultants and legal experts). The result is a multidimensional theoretical model for the professionalization of IndFAs. Building on our model, we also present some general practical implications for IndFAs.

摘要
