Recovery of Rhenium from Superalloy Swarf, Grindings, Turnings, and Scrap

SuperalloysSuperalloys are known for their high-temperature applications, allowing them to be used in many different industries from aerospace to medical. To enhance their properties, many Nickel-based superalloysSuperalloys now contain small amounts of refractory metals, including Rhenium. Through machining and other manufacturing processes, millions of kilograms of superalloySuperalloys waste are created per year, and with it, a sizable amount of Rhenium is left over in the resulting scrap. With the ever increasing cost and limited availability of Rhenium, researchers have worked to recover this critical element for future use. This work aims to understand previous routes that have attempted to feasibly recover Rhenium from superalloySuperalloys waste as well as identifying some opportunities for improvements to these processes of recovery.
