At a time when the reception of Hegel was much more open, Alexandre Koyré affirms the primacy of Hegel’s Jena Moment. Though the dating he assumes was considerably earlier and mistaken, Koyré identifies Hegel’s 1804–5 System-Project as the key moment in Hegel’s Jena trajectory, and also identifies the devolution which transpires between the System-Project and the 1805–6 lectures. His second insight, more philosophically substantive, is to identify the novel and powerful role played by the appeal to difference, or better still “differenting,” in the System-Project, linguistically represented by an abundance of appearances of the Latin-rooted different. This leads to the most significant positive appropriation of Hegel’s Jena-Moment in recent philosophy in the work of Jacques Derrida. Though the Jena Moment is not powerfully represented in recent philosophy, this small but critical intervention into the formation of Derrida’s philosophy of differance casts a significant shadow over recent thinking, and especially thinking about Hegel.
