Metaphysics II: Subjectivity (And Coda)
摘要
The key question governing the introduction to the Metaphysics of Subjectivity is: what has happened to the singular? The short answer is that singular has become singularity. Yet the status of the singular remains a question for the Metaphysics of Subjectivity, where in the first pages this singular sloughs off its objectivity and emerges as ego, ‘I’. Universal having completed its transformation as genus, Hegel now returns to the generic term ‘universal’, making it clear that he understands it in the new sense of genus. Just as previously negation was absolutized, so now is existence. With the turn to the Metaphysics of Subjectivity, there is a reversal of polarity: now the universal, as highest essence or genus, is but a self-equivalence along the path of singularity, and singularity alone is reflection on existence, in which existence is absolutized. The inconceivable point of departure of the proof has taken priority over the proof itself, and existence is thereby conceived. At the end of this chapter, I provide a coda to the project as a whole, in which I discuss the value of the Jena Moment for Hegel’s inceptive thinking.
