Climate Change and Escalating Disaster Risk in the Indian Himalayan Region

The Himalayan region is facing unprecedented challenges due to the escalating impacts of climate change, leading to an alarming increase in disaster risk. This study examined the nexus between climate change and the growing frequency and severity of disasters in the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR). From glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) to flash floods, landslides, and droughts, the region is experiencing a wide array of climate-induced disasters that threaten lives, livelihoods, and ecosystems. The study highlighted the vulnerability of the Himalayan region to climate change and the urgent need for adaptation and mitigation measures. The primary objective of this study was to assess the influence of climate change on disaster risk within the Himalayan region and its long-term sustainability. It entailed a comprehensive examination of Himalayan districts, considering evolving climatic conditions. A review of research conducted in the Himalayan region regarding the climate change scenario was conducted, encompassing discussions on the repercussions of climate change on precipitation patterns, temperature variations, glacier dynamics, and occurrences of extreme hydrological events. Sustainable land management practices, improved infrastructure resilience, and enhanced early warning systems are essential for reducing disaster risks in the region. Collaborative efforts at local, national, and international levels are crucial for addressing the complex challenges posed by climate change in the Himalayas. This study underscored the importance of proactive measures to build resilience and mitigate the impacts of climate change in the Himalayan region.
