For years, the coastal tourist destination of Purba Medinipur of West Bengal, India, has been facing an influx of mass tourism. A large flow of recreational tourists along with excursionists visiting popular destinations of Purba Medinipur such as Digha, Shankarpur, Tajpur, and Mandarmani is creating a huge pressure on the fragile ecosystem of the coastal area, which is often affected by cyclonic disasters too. Presently, indiscriminate expansion of the tourism industry and resultant urbanization have affected the environmental quality, though, at the same time, it has ensured that the locals have livelihood options beyond the primary sector like agriculture and pisciculture keeping in mind the continuous climatic hazards they face. In this context, an attempt has been made to examine the extent to which ecotourism can be developed for the residents of the coastal stretch of Purba Medinipur district, by considering the community perspective. The study is based on an empirical study designed for micro-level investigation involving a questionnaire survey, qual-quant analysis taking samples based on a stratified random sampling approach comprising stakeholders such as local residents, local entrepreneurs, and tourists. The phase-wise land use land cover classification of selected areas will determine the occupational shift, increasing urbanization, and violation of the Coastal Regulation Zone—highlighting the areas of concern. The strength-weakness-opportunity-challenge analysis will lead to a better understanding of the pragmatic ecotourism ventures promising sustainability.

摘要
