Dementia
摘要
There is increasing focus on the potential of rehabilitation for people living with dementia. This partly reflects a paradigm shift, moving away from a narrow focus on decline and deficits caused by dementia diseases and towards a greater emphasis on interventions, e.g. rehabilitation, and positive approaches to promote capacity and quality of life despite living with dementia. It also reflects the growing evidence that both the risk of getting a dementia disease and the time of onset and progression can be influenced by a complex set of potentially modifiable factors, including biological, lifestyle, and psychosocial aspects. This chapter presents various approaches to rehabilitation for people with dementia and discusses the challenges that need to be considered. First, the most common dementia diseases are presented, and the move towards a multifactorial and bio-psychosocial understanding of dementia is discussed. Various examples of rehabilitation methods are presented, and psychosocial and cognition-focused interventions, complementary to rehabilitation, are introduced. Finally, overarching factors that challenge such interventions are discussed, including progression of symptoms, reduced symptom awareness, and challenges related to involving family caregivers.
