Reliably simulating climate by means of comprehensive models has required dedicated numerical techniques. A few of them were developed in Hamburg. (1) Walter Hansen introduced numerical modelling in oceanography, which was one of the foundations of climate modelling in Hamburg. (2) Ernst Maier-Reimer’s Large Scale Geostrophic model of the ocean enabled millennial simulations, e.g., for studying the oceanic carbon cycle. (3) The flux correction (anomaly coupling) method allowed decadal simulations of coupled atmosphere-ocean models without a model drift and, hence, more reliable estimates of global warming.

摘要
