Discussions and Reflections: Synthesizing Insights

In this chapter, the main findings from the three research questions are summarized, followed by a discussion of key issues within conceptual and theoretical frameworks, along with comparisons to past studies. The first issue addressed is the dynamic nature of social environments in study abroad (SA) contexts, characterized by fluid and transitory social ties, which often challenge students’ ability to maintain stable networks. The second focuses on factors that either promote or hinder international students’ TL-mediated socializing, emphasizing the roles of situational/environmental, interpersonal, self-constructed, and relationally co-constructed elements. The third explores the complexity and fluidity of students’ emotional states during TL-mediated interactions, considering both comfort and discomfort. Educational implications and recommendations for supporting international students, host institutions, and instructors are also provided. Additionally, the chapter reflects on the methodological framework, highlighting the advantages of longitudinal qualitative approaches, the integration of diverse research techniques, and the challenges of researching dynamic social interactions. Finally, the author discusses broader research implications, including the importance of flexible methodologies and the potential for studying international students’ experiences even when researchers are not physically present in the host country.
