Noting the prevalence of quotation and citation in Jewish culture, this chapter relates to the prospects of a “thick” Jewish education including a degree of fluency with the languages and literatures of Jewish tradition. A modern preoccupation with originality might be considered to be at odds with traditional approaches which privileged received tradition. Quotation practices are examined, including the tendency to “misprision,” reading traditional sources in an untraditional way. The chapter describes a goal of Jewish education: to instill in each new generation the ability to quote from a broad range of sources with confidence and accuracy, the urge to fashion new Jewish expressions wrought of ancient materials and capacity for moral discernment.
