This chapter considers the role of Jewish community in modern Jewish life. Modernity has placed great strain on the traditional Jewish community, with its emphasis on individual fulfillment. Reports, however, of the demise of the community are premature. Among the images employed in this chapter to consider the role of the community are the chorus and the pool. While the former reminds us that each person is occasionally a soloist but also a part of the chorus, the latter suggests that in a community different individuals can shoulder particular responsibilities, and that in this way the ideal of fulfilling a wide range of obligations can be advanced. The claim is made that non-Orthodox Judaism is in urgent need of vigorous communal structures to allow the highest of its ideals to be realized.
