This chapter is about the centrality of humor in Jewish life. It involves neither reviews of the greatest Jewish comedians nor analyses of the best Jewish jokes. It makes no claim to the superiority or exclusivity of Jewish humor over any other variety. There are no tips here on how to be funny, nor any guidelines on how to avoid insulting or boring people in the process. Instead, the claim here is that laughter, comedy, and humor have always been a part of Jewish life and a claim that a Jewish life without laughter, comedy, and humor is not a life one should seek to lead. The chapter considers the role of humor in Jewish culture and the impact of the modern Jewish experience. It argues that humor is not simply a heart-warming addition to the Jewish story, but a fundamental feature of Jewish life, and also a theological category.
