The original meaning and Biblical usage of the word Azazel is shrouded in mystery, and this chapter addresses some theories relating to this question. It draws attention to the phonetic link between that word and Gaza, and suggests that Gaza plays an Azazel role in Israeli life – a place out in the wilderness to which our sins are expelled. The chapter combines theology with contemporary politics in the wake of the war which began in 2023, and is connected to the chapter on the human condition, Yetzer Lev Ha’adam. There the theme of ingestion was explored – that which we swallow. Here it is the opposite response – that which we banish. Neither strategy alone is considered to be fit for purpose.
