This introduction to Living the Letters comprises five sections relating to the motivation, structure, and ambition of the book. It relates to anxiety and hope as key prompts and then goes on to discuss the term Jewish theology, considering various kinds of theological discourse and proposing a novel distinction between smooth and crunchy theology. The chapter then relates to the alphabetical structure of the book and the role of this structure in Jewish culture. The fourth part looks at Moses Mendelssohn’s notion of Judaism as a living script and the last looks at the example of the Masoretes, who vocalized the letters of the Hebrew alphabet.
