In the present context of Geoheritage being under constant threat due to absence of development planning guidelines at the global level, geotourism has the potential not only to play a crucial role in the conservation of geoheritage but also sustainable development of any area of significant geological value through a regulated tourism activity. Cultural, social and economic aspects are important considerations, which can make geotourism a powerful mode of sustainable tourism particularly in the rural areas of Himalaya. Globally, recreational aspect has been dominant in the geotourism sites developed so far, which are very exclusive in displaying some rare landform or process of nature. Geotourism potential of places with pure geo-educational values supported by the local community has not been tested yet. A Geo-excursion site developed in the Patiya village cluster in Almora district of Uttarakhand is not only significant from a cultural and social point of view but also has great potential to attract young geotourists to pursue field work on different themes of geological studies in the Kumaon himalayan region. The present article highlights the different phases of the development of a geo-site involving identification of geological traverses, development of affordable accommodation (home stays) and community participation. It showcases the efforts that have gone into developing a sustainable geotourism model in a remote Himalayan village cluster that can also be replicated over many parts of Himalaya having a great geodiversity that needs to be conserved.
