Ladakh, ‘the Cold Desert’ in the NW Himalayan and Trans-Himalayan zone represents an important geological and geoheritage site. The region holds significant sites related to understanding of present and past climatic changes along with hidden secrets of the India-Eurasia collision. Glacio-fluvial, fluvio-lacustrine and lacustrine preserves reliable indicator of causative processes, past climate and tectonics of the area. One of the most prominent geological features of this region is the presence of many lakes, generally, formed as a result of reactivation of faults or mass movement and are widespread all along the Ladakh region (present day lakes as well as paleolakes). These lakes are relatable to the fluctuation in glaciations and interglacial periods in the geological past (~Quaternary period). In addition, they are related to the neotectonic movement along the Karakoram fault (a major crustal scale fault) that further played a vital role in drainage disruption in the region as well as complex geomorphic processes forming variety of intertwined landforms. We consider this area to have an incredible potential for developing as geoheritage and geotourism site. These Geo-sites will not only provide tourist attractions but also give an insight about extreme geological processes.
